Covington Visual and Performing Arts Center
Dedicated During Gala Celebration
Close to $100,000 was raised at the weekend gala celebrating the dedication of the Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts at Radford University. It has been more than a decade since former Radford University President Douglas Covington had a vision for a state-of-the arts facility that would enhance the campus' visual and performing arts departments.
Three hundred and fifty people gathered for the Saturday gala festivities that included a brunch, dinner, music and art exhibition. On Sunday, friends and family of the Covingtons met for afternoon tea in the new facility.

RU Teens Outside Initiative Endorsed by the
National Forum on Children and Nature With reports of obesity escalating among American youth, there is an increasing need to encourage children to become active and healthy.
In partnership with The Outdoor Foundation and The National Recreation and Parks Association, Radford University responded to this national problem with the implementation of Teens Outside, a program designed to provide teenagers with a safe and fun environment in which to participate in various outdoor recreation activities and the only program of its kind offered in Virginia.
The Teens Outside program recently received endorsement from the National Forum on Children and Nature as one of 30 projects nationwide that demonstrate new and creative ways to reconnect kids with nature.

Professor Helps Pen Environmental
Blueprint for Obama Administration
Skip Watts, interim chair of Radford University's Department of Geology, is part of a team of environmental specialists and earth scientists who have authored a transition document aimed to provide a blueprint for president-elect Barack Obama in critical areas of energy, natural resources, environmental quality and natural hazards.
The document, Critical Needs for the Twenty First Century: The Role of the Geosciences, outlines policy actions needed to face environmental challenges with the help of the science community. Seven specific needs crucial to future world health and well-being are identified in the blueprint document: energy and climate change; water; waste disposal; natural hazards; infrastructure; raw materials; and education and workforce.

Radford Athletics Update The RU men's and women's basketball teams will hit the road during Thanksgiving Break, with the men traveling around the state and region while the women's squad goes a little farther afield.
Coach Brad Greenberg's Highlanders, who opened their season last week with a win at home over Brevard, take on the University of Virginia in Charlottesville Friday, then play at William & Mary Nov. 25 and at Navy Nov. 29. The team doesn't play at home again until Dec. 4, when they host Gardner-Webb. RU also faces a key early-season Big South matchup on Dec. 6 when the Winthrop Eagles come to town.
The women's team goes to Towson, Md., Nov. 25, then goes across the country to Moraga, Calif., to participate in a Thanksgiving Tournament at Saint Mary's College Nov. 28-29. They also play at Vanderbilt on Dec. 2 before coming back to RU for their first home game of the season on Dec. 5 against Southern Virginia.
